Art & Design Technology, with a concentration in Fashion Design
The intensive training in the Fashion Design program at The Art Institute of New York City, emphasizes innovation and creativity in fashion while providing students with the professional skills and technical knowledge necessary for a successful entry into the fashion industry.
Fashion Design students are introduced to the basic skills of construction in sewing, flat pattern drafting, and draping. Many of our instructors are professional designers who nurture creativity and teach hands-on skills using traditional tools as well as industrial equipment found in the fashion design field. Computerized patternmaking technology is utilized by faculty to develop student talent. Students also take specialty classes in knit construction, menswear, sportswear, and children’s apparel.
In this 21 month Associate of Occupational Studies degree program, business practices, agency procedures, marketing, and client relations are studied to support the creative side of design and provide students with a realistic view of the world of work.
At The Art Institute of New York City, students will be in the right place to get an inside view of New York’s high-profile fashion designer, manufacturers and retailers. All of this is part of building a portfolio to seek an entry-level position as an assistant designer, merchandiser, production specialist, private label designer, stylist, grader, or assistant coordinator.

Art & Design Technology, with a concentration in Graphic Design
Some of today's most dynamic industries are based on graphic design. The fields of advertising, publishing, television, and graphic design offer great opportunities for trained visual communicators, especially designers and artists.
Advertising agencies require the talents of many professionals. Art directors work with writers to develop original concepts. They also supervise a creative process that relies on the expertise of layout artists, production artists, illustrators, photographers, and printers.
In the field of publishing, art directors and designers work with editors and journalists to design and produce magazines, books, and newspapers.
Graphic designers create a vast range of visual communications, including corporate identity programs, consumer package designs, annual reports, exhibit materials, direct mail, brochures, and multimedia presentations.
The television industry employs trained visual artists who use conventional and computer technology to create state-of-the-art television commercials, sophisticated titling, and graphics.
The Art Institute of New York City is the first step toward a career in graphic design. Initially, students develop basic skills in design, illustration, painting, and typography, and are trained in creative problem solving and the ability to offer solutions that are successful in the business of commercial graphics.
Emphasis is placed on learning the skills and techniques of both computer graphics and traditional design and production tools, such as the drawing board and drawing instruments. Advanced training includes the execution of assignments encountered by professionals in the field. Students graduate with the training and portfolio required for entry-level positions in visual communications.
The Graphic Design is a 7-quarter (full-day only) program.

Art & Design Technology, with a concentration in Interior Design
The Interior Design program at The Art Institute of New York City is one rich in theory and practice. The focus on theory in the beginning of the program articulates the guiding principles which provide the foundation for the hands-on application of design concepts. Students will develop abilities in all aspects of the design of three-dimensional space, both residential and commercial rooted in an historical and cultural context. They will learn how to communicate design solutions through a variety of visual media. Students will also learn other skills, such as how the profession interfaces with others, and how to manage the business of the Interior Design profession; as well as the development of aesthetic and ethical sensitivities over the course of the program.

All of this is part of learning the skills and competencies necessary to seek and entry-level position as a junior architectural drafter, designer, or planner.

Art & Design Technology, with a concentration in Video Production
Whether it's information or entertainment, the wide appeal of electronic media has created an increasing need for people skilled in the video production arts. By working with faculty that includes experienced professionals, students in the Video Production program develop competence in the use of the video camera as a technical and imaginative tool for communications art. Students then progress to more advanced skills in multi-camera productions, post-production techniques, non-linear editing, and the creation of a video from initial idea to final, edited composition.This competency-based program that is 21 months in length, is measured at both the individual course and program levels, emphasizes the production process from inception through completion; students engage in both conceptual and applied coursework, as well as hands-on technological applications.The Associate of Occupational Studies Video Production program offers a learner-centered, market-driven curriculum that encourages students to develop their individual talents and to achieve success in a collaborative environment. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions in the fields of advertising, marketing, training, multimedia, television, and corporate communications, among others.
Web Design & Interactive Media
Web design and interactive media is an exciting new field of integrated electronic communications that is becoming an essential part of the business, education, and entertainment industries. The advent of Web design and interactive media has established a regeneration of energy in business that has led to the creation of employment opportunities that require an individual who can combine sound, graphic arts, text, and video/film to enhance the dissemination of information. Compounding this is how the Internet is changing the scope of business today, resulting in the creation of a vast new electronic marketplace where commercial transactions take place in Web-based applications.
The individual interested in this field is one who feels comfortable with and challenged by technology, and who has specialized skills as an artist or technician. Faculty are industry professionals committed to helping students combine their creative abilities with technical skills for entry into the multimedia-related professions of entertainment, publishing, electronic games, education, marketing, corporate communications, and consumer information delivery. Web-based applications present an improved measurability of information effectiveness via click-through, leads, and sales.
By working in classrooms and computer labs, students develop a foundation in drawing and design, image manipulation, multimedia system design, scriptwriting, sound, video, and animation. More complex coursework involves combining animation tools to integrate text, sound, images, animation, and video to complete a project. Students also learn about the structure of electronic games, information design, interactive authoring, computers in animation, and video/teleconferencing.
As an outcome of the program, each student uses all of the skills learned to create an individualized digital portfolio.
